A flexitank is a single-use flexible bladder fitted inside a standard 20-foot container. It turns an ordinary dry container into a bulk carrier for non-hazardous liquids such as edible oils, juices and wine. The bladder is made of several layers of polyethylene with an outer layer of woven polypropylene, and the container walls support it.
Flexitanks typically hold 16,000 to 24,000 litres; some models go up to 26,000 litres. For vegetable oil the larger sizes are common, but the real limit is the container's permitted gross weight, so the quantity is agreed in kilograms or tonnes and not only in litres, because oil is lighter than water. As a rough guide, one 20-foot flexitank carries on the order of 20 tonnes or more of vegetable oil.
Crude sunflower oil and soybean oil can be supplied in flexitanks. Terms and volumes are agreed for each contract.
